Superfood Spirulina

I'm sure you've heard of spirulina before, and if not, girlfriend were have you been?? No seriously, spirulina is a one of a kind superfood and for several reasons. 

What is it good for?

First things first, spirulina is a microalgae that is packed with lots of nutrients and enzymes. Plus it is very alkalising, meaning it helps keep your pH level of your body low. This is overall beneficial, because it keeps your risk for disease and infections low, helps lift your mood, improves memory and energy levels and slows down the aging process. And which women (or man) doesn't want that, right??

How do I take it?

You can get spirulina in different forms, either as powder, in capsules oder pressed as tablets. So which one is the best to use? It really depends on how you prefer to take the Spirulina. If you like making smoothies for breakfast or as a post workout shake, it is best to get powder so you can easily add it. If you are more often in a rush and don't fancy it in your food, tablets are the easiest way to get in those fantastic nutrients on the go, at work or in the gym. The same applies to capsules, although you can also add them to your smoothie, yogurt oder other dishes by breaking open the capsules to release the spirulina powder within.

When should I take it?

 This also depends on what works best for you. There's no timetable on this, unless you want to make one individually for yourself. But obviously if you are that kind of person who likes to mix together a delicious smoothie or hit off the juicer in the morning to create a freshly pressed juice, then that would be ideal for adding that extra kick of spirulina in. You can also just mix it with water, some lemon juice and honey and drink it at any time of the day. As mentioned, it is also perfect for post workout. The only thing you should commit to, is taking spirulina everyday, make it easy for you and choose a way that works with your lifestyle.

Recipes

Here are 2 recipes I love to make with spirulina:

Spirulina Nana Ice Cream

  • 2 frozen bananas (slice and freeze in advance)
  • 2 tsp spirulina powder
  • 1/2 tsp of vanilla powder
  • a dash of almond milk

Toss all the ingredients in a blender and blend till you have a creamy consistency. Depending on how powerful your blender is, this may take a moment, you also might have to scrape the banana pieces off the sides of the blender to mix everything properly.

Pre-Workout-Shake

  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup of spinach
  • 2 tsp spirulina powder
  • 1 tsp maca powder
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 2 cups of water or almond milk

Mix all ingredients together in a blender.
